The archeological sites of Argolida
Inhabited for millennia, Argolida is rich in history and this is reflected on its archeological sites, its monuments and its historical locations that you will find throughout. AKS Conference Centre in Porto Heli has the privilege of being close to a plethora of places that are perfect for a quick trip and escape. From Ancient Alieis to Byzantine monasteries and from beautiful Mycenae to Troizina, Argolida will create a pleasant problem for you: choosing what to see first.
Here we will present to you some of the most important archeological sites in Argolida.
Mycenae, one of the top archeological sites in Greece
This may be a subjective opinion, especially since Greece has so many beautiful archeological sites, but Mycenae can easily stand next to the Parthenon, Delphi, ancient Olympia and Knossos. Majestic walls, ancient tombs, an impressive museum and a unique sense of awe accompany a visit to Mycenae. Follow the trails, read the signs and let yourselves travel to the past.
Epidaurus, the center of civilization, and Asklipieion, the center of health
Epidaurus is one of those rare cases of archeological sites that are in use today. And it’s for something major. One of the most important festivals in Greece takes place at the ancient theater of Epidaurus. The space, however, has a lot more to offer, since that’s where Asklipieion also is, the center where people from all over the then known world would travel to find a cure for their ailment.
Tiryns, small but important
Tiryns may not be the first that comes to mind to someone that wants to visit ancient sites in Argolida, but it is very important and perhaps being so close to Mycenae may be a bit unfair to it. The hill of the town is surrounded by cyclopean walls that can be as thick as eight meters, while some beehive tombs have been found in its acropolis. Chronologically, it belongs, just like Mycenae, to the years beyond 1000 BC.
Avgou monastery, worship and peacefulness
A monastery is a very different trip from archeological sites. Built into the rock, within an impressive natural landscape, Avgou monastery is a welcome change of pace for those who want to explore Argolida.
Troizina, the isolated
Troizina is a small adventure just to get there. The landscape will more than make up for it, however, with ancient monuments from different eras strewn among the trees. The picturesque village nearby is perfect for some relaxation.
Alieis, inside Porto Heli
Ancient Alieis are a sunk ancient town in Porto Heli harbor. If the conference leaves you no time, there is no need to venture far away to learn tidbits of the history of the land. Porto Heli will quench that thirst as well.
